We Died Laughing

I dreamed we danced, drunk on the ocean,
and the pure diamond tips of the waves
were drowned stars sharp as knives
as we sank and we died
laughing.

These are all of your favorite colors,
mirrors reflecting shards of last light
that would hold you and keep
you alive while I died
laughing.

And I knew we were crazy and doomed
when you reached in and pulled out my heart,
with your fingers bone cold
from the grave, and we died
laughing.

You were the dead girl inside my car
in love with the smell of new leather.
With your bare brown arms
and summer dress, we died
laughing.

I dreamed we faded, from black to bleached brown,
and the wind blew the dust from our bones.
We stayed beautiful there
all through the years we died
laughing.
