Howard Phillip Lovecraft was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, which became one of the many backdrops for his stories. However, some of Lovecraft's most terrifying tales took place in the haunted hills and marshes of Arkham and Innsmouth - really a blend of Newbury, Rowley and Ipswich.

Join us in a photographic journey through some of the places described by Lovecraft in Northeast Essex County. Places that have haunted people long before Lovecraft's time, and still continue to do so today.

A path near the old Rowley railroad line where the "dense growth of weeds and briars" hindered one's escape and tore at clothes, but also gave "concealment in case of peril".

At Maudsley Estate on the banks of the Merrimac River. The area is reputed to be haunted, and I believe this could be the setting for the story "The Tomb".

On top of Old Towne Hill in Newbury, where one can see the Lower Green and Parker River, as well as the "blue water and sandy line of Plum Island."
